Classes for the Safety Professional

The courses below are all centered around preventing orthopedic injuries from occurring. These are ideal for conferences or Lunch & Learn-type settings with a target audience of safety and HR professionals. Classes are free of charge, the only cost to you is the cost of hosting the event for your clients/members.

All classes are customizable for time, but generally run 45-60 minutes. If you would like a shorter virtual course, you can pick any subcategory, such as “job rotation” or “documentation,” as a stand-alone course.

-NEW COURSE-

This is a refresher course for anyone who manages injuries or 300 logs. We all probably once knew this information, but over time we forget the nuance of the rules. Using a fun quiz-like format to spur discussion, we review some odd cases that make you think “Wait, is that recordable?”

  • What is/isn’t a work-related injury

  • Is a certain work restriction really a work restriction?

  • When to stop the count on restricted days or days away form work in difference scenarios

Revisiting Record Keeping

This course tackles the current challenges companies are facing regarding recruitment and retention and what the safety professional can do to help retain good talent. Topics include:

  • Why this isn’t just an HR problem to solve and how the safety professional can help

  • Why “kids these days just don’t want to work.” Wait, is that even true?

  • What a happier workforce means for injury rates

  • Ideas for changes in policies and procedures to make your workplace more attractive to younger workers

This presentation was given at the 2022 Region VII VPPPA Safety Conference and the 2023 Iowa-Illinois Safety Council Professional Development Conference

The Safety Professional’s Role in Worker Retention

I Understand the Term “Industrial Athlete,” but Practically Speaking, What Do I Do Now?

This course explains how to go past just using the popular term and expanding to the next step of how to implement practical measures to care for your industrial athletes. Topics include:

  • How muscle imbalances develop, the biomechanics of injuries, and why they are predictive

  • Why your employees are probably still sore even after ergonomic corrections

  • What basketball players and construction workers have in common

This presentation was given at the 2021 Kansas DOL Safety and Health Conference

Giving Time to Non-Catastrophic Injuries: The Humble Sprains and Strains

This course is intended to review your current injury prevention measures and critically think if there are ways to improve them. Topics include:

  • Unlocking the potential of pre-shift stretching programs- making them more functional, participatory, and comprehensive to better benefit the employees and reduce injuries

  • Early Intervention- strategies to prevent first aid injuries from becoming recordable

  • Tying job dissatisfaction to injury rates (and turnover)

This presentation was given at the 2020 National Safety Council of Nebraska Health and Safety Summit and at the 2022 Iowa-Illinois Safety Council Conference and Expo

Practical Strategies for Reducing Recordable Injuries

This course discusses how to reduce your injury numbers even when employees seek medical care outside of your network. Topics include:

  • Review of national injury trends

  • What we achieve with pre-shift stretching (Is it a warm-up for the day or does it have long-term benefits?)

  • Job rotation (Did you know that job rotation can increase injuries? We discuss how that can be and how to avoid it.)

  • Partnering with a trusted occupational medicine provider

  • Documentation

This presentation was given at the 2022 Associated Builders and Contractors Cornhusker Safety Conference and the 2022 Hawkeye on Safety annual conference
